Product Profitability Insights: A deep dive into sales of Texas Instruments Graphing Calculator.

The Business Challenge

To maximize ROI, a company must understand not just what is selling, but who is buying and where those sales are most profitable. This project analyzes the sales performance of Texas Instruments graphing calculators across the United States, specifically focusing on identifying the most lucrative customer segments and regional profit drivers.

A Tableau Story page titled "Profitability of Products Story" with a sequence of text boxes at the top. The view features a vertical bar chart showing graphing calculator sales volume across customer segments and a shaded choropleth map tracking sales density by state across the United States.

Key Insights Discovered

  • The Power of the Individual Consumer: My analysis revealed that the Consumer Segment outperformed Corporate and Small Business segments by a significant margin. This suggests that the product's primary lifecycle is driven by individual educational needs rather than bulk institutional purchasing.

  • Profitability vs. Volume: By mapping sales geographically, I identified "profit hotspots" where high sales volume aligned with low operational costs, providing a blueprint for regional marketing focus.

  • Market Sensitivity: Identified that while Corporate orders were larger in scale, their frequency and total profit contribution lagged behind the consistent, high-volume demand from individual retail consumers.
